START HERE > CONTROL PANELS SELECTION:

Every card access system starts with door control panel. Readers do NOT open the doors, door controller does. Readers are assigned to send card data (serial number) to the control panel for processing. According to pre-programmed rules (time schedules, holidays, access levels, position in the system) and card number door controller shall unlock the door. Decision is made within moment and few seconds later door controller locks door back keeping room or premises safe.

Your needs may be single door or hundreds of doors. Proper card access can satisfy both needs. You can also start with single door or couple of doors and grow bigger as situation demands. Single door controllers are most economical way to control door access because they need minimal infra structure to do it. On other hand single door controllers are most of the time limited to very basic functions, unlock the door. No PC programming, no reports, no shedules, basically no features. Fully featured card access comes with comprehensive software and communication infra structure so programming is changed in seconds and panels updated effortlessly.

Few facts are visible from the tables above. It worths repeating how to start building card access system:

If your intention is just simple door control take single door controller, even if there are 2-3 doors to protect
 IP based door controllers allow you to use existing Ethernet (LAN) infra structure and no additional communications wiring is needed
 IP based door controllers usually have built-in WEB server that takes care about simple cards and door management
 Per door price drops when you use 4 door or 8 door controllers
 Usually you can mix and match controllers between same brand. Example, use mix of 2, 4 or 8 door Keyscan controllers

 Fully featured card access systems require dedicated software to use full potential of card access management
 Card access management software usually has built-in supporting for ID badging
 Cards have pre-programmed usually 5 digit serial number that has to be entered into the system in order to activate the card
 Most of the cards have also extra 3 digit code programmed called SC (Site Code) or FC (Facility Code)
 Using SC/FC you are increasing security of your system and reducing possiblity of duplicating cards, intentional or fraudlent
As soon as you start managing card access system record used card ranges so you don't buy duplicate cards in future
Most of the controllers will take any of the popular HID reader and card families
 Don't use bar code, mag stripe and Wiegand card readers and cards. Those technologies are not considered secure
 Most secure credentials are HID contactless iCLASS and MIFARE cards
 Access cards, keyfobs, printable cards, tags have same kind of chip inside, only physical packaging is different
 Keyscan offers 36 bit secure Keyscan formatted cards. Costs more but impossible to duplicate, no duplicate cards orders
 Honeywell offers 34 bit formatted cards. Harder to get, a bit less chance of duplicating cards
MIFARE is used in large numbers worldwide, just emerging in North America. Cards are low cost, secure and printable
 If original MIFARE serial number is used there is no chance of having duplicate cards, ever!
If building new system or re-building old one consider HID iCLASS smart cards and readers rather than 125 KHz prox technology
 To increase access security to maximum use card/fingeprint readers instead of card readers only
 Also for high security applications integrate CCTV into card access. Most of the software packages have that feature built-in
RS485 communications means twisted shielded pair of wire, usually AWG 18 or AWG 20. Max distance is 4000 ft from PC
RS485 allows up to 31 control panels connected in daisy chain configuration spread throughout the building, 4000 ft max distance
 All controllers should be equippped with backup battery that powers up the card access system when there is no main power
 Backup battery is usually good for 3-8 hours of use
